GoodRISE

Where good rises. A multi-tenant platform for nonprofits: people, giving, volunteers, events, grants, programs, communications, workflows and board governance in one record.

GoodRISE is Optimistic's own product, built for the nonprofits whose mission has outgrown disconnected tools. It began as a concept deck and a grant-tracking demo, became a researched position against Planning Center and Church Community Builder, then a prototype with ten modules, and then a real system: a React and TypeScript app on Cloudflare Pages, a Supabase backend with 111 tables and row-level tenant isolation, an event bus and workflow engine in Postgres, an outbox for every email and SMS, Stripe Connect functions, donor and board portals, and an HQ console where the operator manages every client organization. Young People in Recovery is the founding pilot.

Five spreadsheets, four logins, a dashboard nobody trusts. GoodRISE is one record, built from the ground up.

The challenge

Mid-sized nonprofits live in what we called the messy middle: too big for a spreadsheet, priced out of enterprise CRMs, stuck with per-seat tools that never share a record. The product had to replace that stack with one database and flat pricing, feel warm rather than corporate, and still hold up to real scrutiny: multi-tenant security, audit trails, HIPAA-aware design, and honest reporting a board would trust.

It also had to be built the way a product company builds, not a demo: migrations, a security advisor pass after every function, a real-versus-mock audit so nothing is claimed that does not run, and a handover any developer can start from.

The approach

One journey, applied to GoodRISE.

01

Clarify

Market and feature research against Planning Center and CCB produced the thesis: one record per relationship, escalating pipelines, flat pricing for the 100-to-400-person organization. Ten modules were scoped from a concept deck and a grant-tracking demo, with YPR's real data as the first seed.

Design

The brand: Deep Teal anchor, Sun orange for RISE and calls to action, Gabarito and Inter, a sunrise mark, a two-tier icon system with a signature color per module. The app got a Mission View dashboard, a warm Dawn-to-teal palette and a visual report builder; the marketing site went through four directions to a white-ground page with real app screenshots.

Build

Fifty-nine migrations from foundation to workflow engine: orgs, roles and permissions, audit triggers, then People, Giving, Programs, Grants, Events, Volunteers, Groups, Outreach, Forms, Advocacy, HR, Workflows, Journeys, Reporting and Time. Server logic lives in Postgres: an event bus, drip campaigns, a workflow engine on a five-minute cron, an outbox dispatched every minute, and Stripe checkout, connect and webhook edge functions.

Ship

app.goodrise.io on Cloudflare Pages, goodrise.io on Flywheel, a private repository, an HQ console with providers vault, tenant module gating and staff invites, and a developer handover that lists every account, where every secret lives and what is verified versus deferred. Email, SMS and payments are wired and report honestly until provider keys are entered.

What’s inside

Ten modules, one database.

Mission View

A dashboard that opens on the whole mission: relationships, giving, programs, chapters and impact with sparklines, needs-attention and next steps.

People & households

One record per person with roles, engagement timeline, momentum, households and soft credits.

Giving

Donations, campaigns, pledges, recurring gifts, funds and receipts, with Stripe Connect for each organization.

Programs & grants

Sites, participants, distributions and surveys; funders, grants, application cycles and task deadlines.

Events & volunteers

Registration, check-in by code, shifts with credential gating, callouts and training courses.

Chapters & groups

Gatherings, QR sign-up, onboarding queues and role-based reporting for distributed networks.

Communications

Broadcasts, drip campaigns with automatic enrollment, forms with public submissions and an outbox for every message.

Workflows

Triggers such as Person Added, Donation Received and Form Submitted drive tasks, tags and drips, mirrored exactly between UI and SQL.

Reporting & governance

A visual report builder, saved reports, board roster, meetings, minutes, votes and private packets, plus donor and board portals.

Verified against the production project on October 5, 2026. Email, SMS and card payments are built and wired but inert until provider keys are entered; nothing on this page is claimed that has not been run.
