The Initiative
Colorado's only victim advocacy organization for people with disabilities, rebuilt as a fast, accessible custom WordPress site with a Quick Exit and a Safety Alert built in.
The Initiative has served survivors with disabilities since 1985. Its Elementor site had an empty impact page, thin program pages, an intake form on a different domain and no clear safety path. Optimistic rebuilt it as a custom WordPress theme: four motion concepts, a combined direction the client approved, 16 real pages with the organization's own copy and photography, six Gravity Forms migrated including an 85-field, three-page intake in English and Spanish, an interactive 64-county impact map with real numbers, a site-notice system staff can switch on without a developer, and five rounds of review through Optimistic's own Live Review tool.
For survivors with disabilities, the website is a safety tool. Every page had to be calm, fast and exit-able.
A survivor looking for help might have seconds, and might be watched. The site had to load fast, read plainly, let someone leave instantly to a neutral page, and explain, once, that browsing history can be seen. At the same time it had to be fully accessible to the people the organization exists for, keep the copy the client had already approved, and match the purple brand exactly.
Underneath, the intake form is survivor data. It could not become a mailto or a plain HTML form; it had to stay in Gravity Forms with confidential storage and conditional logic, in English and Spanish, with a waitlist notice staff could turn on and off themselves.
From a page-builder site to a custom one.
The Elementor site is still live at theinitiativeco.org while the rebuild finishes review. Same organization, same purple, same copy where the client wanted it kept.

One journey, applied to The Initiative.
Clarify
We scrubbed the live site page by page and built four homepage concepts, each with its own motion language: hope and warmth, safety first, stories-led, immersive. The client combined the first and third into the production direction.
Design
Brand purple from the logo files, the light purple sampled from the 2025 letterhead and darkened for contrast where it carries text. Real photography from the client's shoot replaced every stock image; staff portraits in black and white; survivor photos only with releases on file.
Build
Fifteen page templates provisioned by the theme, shared header and footer, the six Gravity Forms exported from the old site and imported with their plugins, a Stripe donate form, an interactive Colorado choropleth generated from county data with every served county labelled, a dropdown navigation, retired-page redirects and a Site Notices admin screen with optional auto-off dates.
Review
The client reviewed the live review site with Optimistic Live Review, pinning comments on the page itself. Five rounds, 61 pins, each answered and resolved: photos placed, copy from the client's edits doc applied, Spanish intake reworked, resources turned into an accordion, Quick Exit tuned from too loud to just right. An axe-core scan of all 17 pages finished with zero violations.
Built around the person on the other side of the screen.
Quick Exit
A persistent button on every page, plus Escape three times, leaves the site for a neutral weather page immediately.
Safety Alert
A one-time notice explains that browsing can be monitored and how to clear history, then stays out of the way.
Impact map
All 64 Colorado counties, drawn from county data, with a number on every served county and judicial-district breakdowns.
Intake, EN and ES
The 85-field, three-page intake stays in Gravity Forms with eligibility questions, a not-eligible path to 2-1-1 and a staff-controlled waitlist notice.
Resources accordion
Crisis, counseling, legal, medical and more, grouped and searchable on one page, with a Spanish section.
Site Notices
Waitlist and office-closed notices in English and Spanish that staff switch on in wp-admin, with optional end dates.
Films
Survivor stories from the organization's Vimeo channel, click-to-play, keyboard operable, with real poster frames.
Donate
Three giving tiers tied to real costs, a Stripe form and the 990 and Candid seal in the footer.
Accessibility
A toolbar for text size, contrast and reduced motion, underlined inline links, and zero automated WCAG 2.1 AA violations across the site.
Real numbers, from the organization's own reporting.
Client figures from The Initiative's 2024 to 2025 reporting. The rebuilt site is on its review host awaiting the client's Stripe and reCAPTCHA keys before it replaces theinitiativeco.org.
